Bloom Teas London BLOOM Sunrise Matcha, Makes a refreshing cold Matcha tea

I became interested in matcha after watching the tv programme, ‘the truth about superfoods’. I have been drinking green tea for many years and i wanted to try matcha. I have green tea teabags with matcha and that is quite drinkable. This green tea is an acquired taste, drinking it straight as a tea may not be for everyone but adding to smoothies is definitely worth a try. Matcha is an expensive product, due to the intensive harvesting and process by which they create the powder. This pot is good value and will last, the spatula provided is helpful. I am sold on the health benefits of matcha, i try to get as many antioxidant sources into my diet as possible.

I have bought bloom products for some time now. This is a great alternative to coffee and energy drinks. I mix with water, shake, and drink. I get a noticeable increase in energy and concentration.

BLOOM Sunrise Matcha (30g)

  • Organic Japanese Matcha – Ceremonial Grade.
  • Flavoured with zesty grapefruit.
  • Naturally fat-free, low in sugars and salt, high in fibre and protein.
  • FREE-FROM’ all allergens and suitable for Vegans and Vegetarians.
  • Make hot or iced tea or whisk into juices, smoothies, lattes, cereal, yoghurt, soup, salad, rice, pasta, pulses and desserts.

Dairy free, gluten free, wheat free. Low in sugars and salt, high in fibre and protein. This is clearly a very healthy choice of drink but i must confess that my only consideration when trying this was the taste. Unfortunately whilst i thought it was reasonably pleasant and i will probably finish the jar there is no chance whatsoever that i would purchase more, certainly not for its rather hefty selling price. I was hesitant before ordering this because i don’t particularly like the taste of grapefruit but this turned out to be no problem as the grapefruit flavour in this drink is fairly mild, making it taste fruity rather that grapefruity. Overall, i would rate this product no more than okay, as it is something that i will probably only drink occasionally, whenever the mood takes me, rather than daily as a substitute for my usual drinks of choice.

The main difference between this matcha product and other matcha products – and i have tried a few – is the taste. The grapefruit taste makes it bearable and after a few days, quote pleasant to drink. The price is no different than other premium brands, so i really can’t fault it.

This ‘tea shot’ is actually surprisingly nice. The taste is a concentrated green tea flavour with a slight hint of grapefruit. To make the shot you simply add 1/2 tsp of powder to 100ml hot water and mix it together thoroughly, then pour over ice to make an iced tea. It makes a great addition to smoothies and juices too but it is nice enough to drink on its ownthe shot is very green, think blended greens green, and cleanses the palate nicely. It is recommended to have 1 shot a day for optimal digestive results. It’s pretty effective at reducing bloating and you certainly feel as if you’ve done something healthy. The price isn’t crazy for what you get as with 1 shot a day this should last approx 2 months for one person. This is a really nice way to take in superfoods without feeling like you’re making an effort about it.

Love bloom teas and have most of my office converted to drinking bloom matcha in the morning over a coffee. Unlike some green teas you don’t get that bitter aftertaste which is great and you certain feel a bit of a boost. Next on my to buy list is the mojito matcha.

      1. Of the varitety of flavours this brand offers is awesome to change them up. This is the creme of creme of match’s powder’s out there because of the varitety of flavours this brand offers is awesome to change them up. I love this flavour for the mornings. . Amazon also offers the best deals on this brand compared to other retailers. Bloom need to offer bigger sizes for better value as matcha is becoming increasing popular in the uk for health reasons. Sometimes size quantity has been a issue though.

    1. Bloom sunrise matcha with grapefruit flavouring. This is a super product, it mixes easily and tastes fantastic. I have always drunk green tea and this one from bloom does not disappoint. The matcha can also be made into a hot drink or iced tea, whisk into juices, smoothies, lattes, cereal, yoghurt, soup, salad, rice, pasta, pulses and desserts. The jar contains enough matcha for 30 servings and comes complete with it’s own measuring spoon. I find that a little bowl spoon would have been easier to use, as the one that is contained in the jar is flat and a bit difficult to get a proper measurement from. The grapefruit flavouring gives the matcha a nice tangy zing which is very pleasant. If your a green tea drinker then give this a go, i don’t think you will be disappointed. Great taste, great price and super healthy, therefore its 5* from me folks.

  4. Pretty good, and from someone who doesn’t like tea, green or otherwise, that’s better praise than it sounds. I’ve never been a big fan of tea, green or otherwise, so i was pleasantly surprised by this matcha powder. I’d heard all the hype about the health benefits of matcha so i thought i’d give it a try regardless. That said, i don’t actually drink it as a tea – i add it to milk and whisk it with a frother. I’ve also added it into smoothies, milkshakes, and it seems to work quite well. I’m not sure it’s something i’d choose to drink if it wasn’t supposedly good for me though. I can’t say i’ve noticed any particular difference since drinking it – i don’t feel especially energised or alert or anythingthe jar comes with a little serving spatula, which i really don’t see the point of, since it’s just a tiny flat spatula. I chucked it and use a spoon. There’s about 30 servings in the jar. The flavour is a little overpowering, takes a while to get used to, although it’s certainly not unpleasant.

Having only ever tried powdered green tea once before i was a little unsure about this but its lovely. The grapefruit flavour helps take away the slight bitterness you get normally and as long as you whisk the powder up enough you dont get that horrible residue at the bottom of your mug like you do with some powdery drinks. I’ve a nice healthy little pick-me up after lunch and as brilliant to include as part of a healthy diet – espcially if you are trying to detox and cleanse your body. I would certainly buy this again.

      1. I have to say i have never heard of matcha before i got this product but i certainly will be hearing a lot more about it, firstly it is really cool to have a little spoon that you use to make the drink, the drink is easy to make and i have to say tastes lovely (very citrussy but not in a earl grey tea kind of way). It is very refreshing, and apparently very good for you. I am impressed, will be trying more of this product.

    1. Interesting new-to-me flavour. I’ve never had matcha tea before, so not much to compare it with. It’s a fine green powder, apparently from japan, which you add in tiny qualtities to hot watwer to make a bright green drink. It smells of grapefruit quite strongly, and you can certainly taste this in the made up drink. Apparently people drink this to become “calm and alert” which tbh i could do with, so i made up a cup and got stuck in. No amount of whisking would produce the promised froth, perhaps that’s my lack of expertise, but no matter, it didn’t look unappetising in the cup, a bit powdery maybe. It tasted pretty good, grapefruity with green tea overtones, i’ve no idea how “authentic” this is, but it’s quite a nice change from coffee to start the day, and i could convince myself it’s healthier too, though it does contain caffeine. The very small jar seems very expensive, but you only use a fractionof a teaspoon so it goes a long way.

  8. A clean tasting grapefruit matcha. This matcha green tea is from japan. The mix is 90% matcha plus 10% natural grapefruit flavouring. Attached to the side of the jar is a little serving spatula, four scoops of which make one serving. The 30g jar has enough for approximately 30 servings. The powdered, light green matcha has a fresh, clean grapefruit aroma in the jar. The grapefruit flavour is less noticeable in the drink than the aroma from the jar would suggest, although it has a good mouth loyalty. It is not as harsh a grapefruit flavour as some of the citric green tea teabags i’ve had. I learnt to avoid those so i was hesitant to try this. I am pleased that i have tried this matcha because it is far nicer.

Let’s get the negatives out of the way first; my little jar of bloom sunrise was insufficiently packed and came with a cracked top and some slight leakage. It’s also a bit on the pricey side. A little of the matcha is all you need to make a mug full of green tea. It dissolves readily in hot (don’t use boiling) water and can then be enjoyed as a hot drink or left to cool and served as iced tea. The fruit flavouring is quite pronounced and the colour is very green – far more than your usual tea bag green tea. The caffeine content is fairly high and i felt the boost almost instantly. A very pleasant alternative to coffee for your morning pick-you-up or if you feel your energy flagging during the day. Yes probably, but would prefer to buy from a shop rather than risk breakage in the post.

Was apprehensive at first as usually not a fan of fruit flavoured teas, although a regular drinker of loose leaf green tea however i was pleasantly surprised. Adding hot water to a few scoops of the matcha powder released a noticeable grapefruit scent. The taste was fortunately less overpowering than the smell, and did compliment rather than retract the green tea taste. Although i enjoyed the product, i would be more likely to consider as a gift rather than buying for myself as the packaging is well presented and would make a great introduction to matcha or an alternative to fruit green teas for someone.

Good value but not their best. For those who don’t know matcha, it is a concentrated form of green tea with very high levels of catechins and polyphenols which are thought to protect against cancer and other age related deterioration. They are also said to be energy boosting and mind boosting but there is little scientific evidence of that. It comes in two main grades, culinary grade and ceremonial grade (for the japanese tea ceremony), the latter being more expensive and tasting better. However, whether anyone seriously drinks it for the flavour is questionable. Even the best matchas taste very bitter and grassy. I have compared this with five other matchas from bloom, two other ceremonial grade matchas and one culinary grade. This is quite good but i don’t think the idea of adding flavouring works. The flavour isn’t strong enough to mask the bitterness and grassy flavour with a bit of grapefruit doesn’t taste a lot better than grassy flavour on its own. They do a plain one which is good.

    1. Could do with some instructions. When i first added hot water to this matcha powder, there was a very strong (but pleasant) grapefruit scent and i was worried that there would be a strong “fake” grapefruit taste with this tea. I usually keep away from flavoured teas for this reason. However the flavour is very sublte and does not overpower the delicate matcha flavour at all. My only reservation is that the famed green tea “after-taste” normally found with matchas is replaced by a grapefruit aftertaste, which is a shame, since that is one of the main reasons to drink good quality green tea. . Another minus for this tea is that the label is so full of information and serving suggestions – sprinkle into soups, salads and pastas, that there is nowhere on the label to tell you how to make a straightforward cup of matcha. If you have not made matcha before you would struggle to know how to make it. I suggest if you are giving this as a gift, to print off matcha making instructions from the web to go with it as making matcha is not just a case of adding powder to hot water. The jar does though come with a small serving spoon – pictured.

  15. I’ve previously tried matcha from other brands and wasn’t too keen, although i am a fan of green tea for its health and metabolic benefits. I had not heard of the bloom brand before but it is fantastic quality and far superior to any i have previously tasted. I’m trying to wean myself off carbonated energy drinks and am actively looking for alternatives. With the addition of guarana, bloom have made a viable and healthy energy boosting drink which is delicious. I have seen that bloom offer various other matcha powders with other specific health and wellbeing focuses and i’ll definitely be exploring these other options. I love the premium packaging too, compared with the pouch packets i’ve used before.

      1. Well, at almost 40p a mug, this is a fairly expensive mug of home made tea. But this grapefruit flavour is good and slightly less bitter than some teas. This product claims to have less than 30mg caffeine per 1g serving, which is slightly less than a typical mug of green tea. It is 90% organic matcha green tea from japan and 10% natural grapefruit flavouring. No burping (unlike one of the others in this series i tried).

It has a nice strong taste as a green tea and i like that you can drink it as a tea or add it to smoothies. I love that it comes in a glass jar with a tiny spatula, although i find it easier to just use a half a spoon measurer. The added grapefruit gives it a bit of a citrusy hint. This matcha also smells nice. This is my fourth matcha from bloom and i am very happy with it.
